Energy use

The ATO aims to improve its energy performance by integrating energy-efficient features into building fit-out designs, including zoned sensor lighting, multi-function devices to replace standard printers, and energy-efficient appliances in kitchens in all sites.

In 2015–16, we achieved an 11% reduction in electricity consumption compared to the previous year. This is a notable achievement as it matches the reduction from the 2014–15 year. It demonstrates that we are committed to identifying ways to use energy more efficiently. Energy savings were realised through consolidating properties and space, and undertaking refurbishment projects.

We had a tenant light and power energy intensity rating of 5,028 megajoules (MJ) per person compared to the Energy Efficiency in Government Operations (EEGO) target of 7,500 MJ per person. For central services (providing services common to all tenants in an office building), we saw an energy intensity rating of 358 MJ per square metre compared to the EEGO target of 400 MJ. While we have continued to reduce our overall electricity consumption through improvements to our property portfolio, our energy intensity ratings have increased slightly as a result of changes to our staffing levels and office space.

  1. The base building, whole building, indoor environment quality and water ratings are completed at the building owner’s discretion. Where there is no assessment shown in the table, the building owner has chosen not to undertake an assessment.
  2. NABERS (National Australian Built Environment Rating System) is a national rating system that measures the environmental performance of Australian buildings and tenancies.
